Mawaru Penguindrum Episodes 1-16

It’s been a while since I blogged about anime on this blog and posted an audio post at that, so I want to talk about an anime that has been on my radar lately: Mawaru Penguindrum. It’s a stretch to say that I will be reviewing about all of the 16 present episodes, since this anime has too… err, flesh in one episode that me blogging about 16 will take me the whole day.

Episode 16 was surprisingly unsatisfying for me since it sidetracked a lot (relatively more than the usual sidetracking in this series), so let me make a remark about episode 15 first: SO THE DIARY MUST BE REALLY THE PENGUINDRUM. It’s a mystery up to now what the hell the penguindrum is, but episode 15 showed evidence that the diary does possess powers, and a terrifying one at that: changing fate. Putting aside that Momoka is Ringo in a pink wig, maybe Ringo’s delusion that she is Momoka’s reincarnation is true if the diary is really capable of transferring fate. I have been confused for some time now at the contents of the diary. For one, if Momoka died when she was in elementary (correct me if I’m wrong), then why does her diary contain entries such as marrying Tabuki? Weird right?! That is somewhat stalkerlike, right? So these kind of tendencies must run in their blood—if Ringo really isn’t Momoka’s reincarnation. Even if Momoka’s diary had the power to change her fate, isn’t writing about her marriage tons of years before obsessive? Maybe she died because she wrote too many entries.(=__= )

Once again I applaud this series for feeding us clues without us realizing it. It took me some thinking time before I realized the diary’s validity as the penguindrum, because by episode 15, the focus on finding the penguindrum has been shifted to other numerous things. I mean that yuri scene by Yuri (heheh) certainly can make you forget things. The only complaint I have is Shoma’s sudden turnaround in behavior. The Shoma that I have been watching isn’t the Shoma that the series has been building up for in the earlier episodes, so I’m kind of sad for Ringo. Congratulations to her tho for realizing her love for Shoma, after all, Tabuki really looks way too old for his age and isn’t even good looking.(=3=) But! But there’s still hope for Shoma since he did panic on episode 15. I root for their pairing big time.

After watching episode 16, may I ask, how many episodes is this show planning to air? It keeps on giving us stories that one can have no idea how they intertwine, and really. THIS. SHOW. HAS. EVERYTHING. A possession? Ohmaygas I though they’ve already run out of ideas. I’m not complaining that much, I love what they keep coming up with. Especially taboos. I love taboos on my anime and manga.♥ That incest kiss is what got me hooked on this show anyway, so what harm would parental mutilation, frog-love potions, sexually harassing penguins, historical bombings, and crazy stalkers do?

I have so many things I want to say (I shouldn’t have put off blogging about this) but any longer than this and no one would pay attention. But really, I have so much love for this show. I hope they end it well. Not end it now, okay.
